Slow the Flow continue to expand our links with local primary schools.
We are immensely proud of the partnerships we have developed and continue to expand with schools across Calderdale. The list of professionals and pupils who are now enjoying and accessing the materials created and delivered by Slow the Flow stands as firm evidence of the positivity of this learning experience. In the past year, we have visited around fifteen schools in the Calderdale catchment and it’s been great to see the impact and enthusiasm the resources and scheme of work have had on pupils and teaching professionals.
At the centre of this success is the relevance of our teaching materials, grounded very much within the KS2 curriculum while at the same time placing it firmly in the local context of the Calder valley and the devastating floods of recent years.
Our aim when creating and delivering the material was always to support students to take a thoughtful and considered approach to climate change and the impacts of flooding on the local community. The materials were designed with the specific aim of enriching the pupils experience of the curriculum, and by allowing them to explore a range of materials where Natural Flood Management and nature-based solutions are at the centre of an enjoyable learning experience.
Through delivering the sessions, Slow The Flow have had the immense satisfaction to witness how pupils have thrived on the opportunity to work collectively, to draw up plans, explore new concepts and to discuss and present their ideas and solutions with confidence and enthusiasm.
Children have loved learning about the processes of a local river, the history of flooding in Calderdale and how they as individuals and as the next generation can make a difference. The amazing ideas, team work and ability to grasp the challenges and to present solutions make every workshop a new and unique learning experience. At the end of each workshop, the verbal and written feedback from both pupils and teachers has been the inspiration to continue our great work with schools.
As a result, the reputation of our work in Calderdale schools continues to grow with many schools booking us in for repeat visits and a growing list of schools signing up for future workshops. You can find the education resources on the Slow the Flow website.
