Farmers and landowners are invited to apply for funding to implement Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures on their land.
Projects of all sizes are welcome, with funding available for various activities such as creating attenuation basins, building leaky dams, planting trees and hedges, and managing woodlands.
The Scheme is managed by Calderdale Council and supported and funded by the Environment Agency. It is unique to Calderdale and was developed with local partners, including Slow The Flow, to help build Calderdale’s resilience to flooding.
To date, 52 natural flood management projects have been funded through the NFM Grant Scheme. Examples of these works include:
- Attenuation basins – dry ponds that fill when it rains temporarily holding back water
- Leaky dams – natural materials that are placed in streams or gullies to slow the flow of water
- Tree planting – trees help to slow down water flowing overland and increase the amount of water soaking into the ground
- Hedgerows across slopes – like trees, hedgerows slow down water that is flowing across the land

Support with projects is available from Calderdale Council’s Natural Flood Management Team. Funding to pay an external contractor to manage the project and assistance with applying for the grant scheme is also offered.
